The ten-week core (Chapters 1 through 10) was constructed by surveying publicly available clinical-trials syllabi from graduate biostatistics departments, including the courses at Yale, Minnesota, Wisconsin, UCSF, Duke, and the University at Buffalo, and adopting the topics common to most of them: the justification for randomized experiments, protocol and endpoint development, randomization methods, blinding and placebos, sample size determination, non-inferiority, early-phase designs, the primary analysis of parallel-group trials, interim monitoring, adaptive designs, missing data, and reporting.

The advanced-topic chapters (11 through 28) derive from the author’s methodological research compendia. Each such chapter names its source compendium in a Provenance section.
